How-to: DIY Fender Eliminator

[The following was submitted by Bryan T… Thanks man!]

Fender EliminatorInstead of spending 100.00 plus dollars on a pre made fender eliminator kit where some of the after market versions say they won’t except the option rear seat cowl I thought I could make something for free and spend the 100 bucks somewhere else.

Tools that I used: Dremel with spiral cutter, grinding stones/burrs and the flex shaft attachment.

Time involved: Be ready to spend some time as the whole section of the bike must be taken apart where you will need to strip off the tail light housing so that you can work on it closely.

Ninja 250R K-Factory Exhaust Sound Clip

Last week, I posted about some of the goodies from Japan from K-Factory. Their slip-on exhaust was received with mixed reviews on it’s blued titanium look.. But now we have some sound clippage to go with the look…

Personally, I don’t think it sounds unique enough to stop everything and run out and buy it. But then again, I guarantee you’ll be the only cat in town with one of these guys on your Ninja 250 if you were able to pick one up..

Opinions? Thought?

How large of a tire can I run on a Ninja 250R?

motorcycle tire cutawayI have been seeing this question pop up more and more in the forums, and it seems like every day someone is asking me when I’m going to put a larger tire on the back of my Ninjette…

Short Answer: 140/70-17

Long Answer:

Anything larger than a 140 will most likely rub against the chain guard. You could possibly remove the chain guard and cram something larger in there, but removing safety features is always a bad idea. Also, anything larger on a 3.5″ rim is not a good idea. So, before start going nuts with tires, there are a few things you should consider:

By going with a tire larger than the stock 130, you’ll loose some of the nimbleness of the Ninja. Granted it won’t be much, but enough to notice it. You’re also going to be adding some additional weight to the the rotating mass of the bike, all while increasing the final drive ratio a tad with a taller tire (Which will be exaggerated even more if you have gone to a 15 tooth sprocket). This means more power needed to turn the tire, and possibly a minor loss in performance.

Overall: So, unless you know what you’re doing — Stay with the 130. Larger tires are most likely better suited for people who track their bike vs. around town bashers.

Note: When buying new tires — The 130,140/70-17 is a popular front tire on some sport bikes. So, make sure you’re buying a rear tire, and not a front, compounds and sidewalls may differ.

Weekend Wrencher Must Have: Mechanics Stool

Mechanics Stool | Mechanics SeatSince the Ninja 250R is a very popular first bike for many riders, there might be a few tools that you don’t know about That can really help you out.

The First MUST HAVE is a solid mechanics stool. This will keep you off the ground and off your knees. Most importantly, it’ll keep your arms at project level so they don’t get fatigued while working. This guy is perfect for working on Motorcycles, ATV’s, Quads, Scooters, etc.

As an added bonus, make sure you buy one with a parts tray. This way, as you take off nuts and bolts, you have a place to put them so they don’t get misplaced. I personally like one with 2 trays.. I have one tray to keep tools, and one to keep parts.

You can pick a craftsman one up at Sears (see picture) for about $80 — Or you can find they at most home improvement and auto-parts stores for ~$40.

Trust me. They are worth every penny.

Competition Werks Fender Eliminator

Competition Werks fender eliminator

What? Don’t you like taking a hack saw and dremel to your brand new motorcycle? I guess I can’t blame you. Granted there are indeed some really nice DIY fender chops, if you’re looking to keep your stock parts in tact and want a really clean look check out the Competition Werks fender eliminator.

This can be ordered from their website for about $110 [USD] — But I have seen them floating around eBay for less than 100$. I actually just bought one and plan on painting it black to help it fit in a little better. I’ll post details on that later.

*UPDATE* Just got my kit, and looked at the instructions…. You DO have to cut the fender to install this. I’ll post a how-to this weekend.
