Even Ninja’s Hibernate..

Well, better late than never… (That’s what she said…)

As it gets cold out, and more and more people start to stash their bikes in a dark corner of their garage for a couple of months, There are a few good steps to help insure that you’ll be able to jump back right back on the old trusty steed come spring without issue.

There are literally 100’s of places on the internet with opinions of how to Winterize your bike: But there are two good ones for those of you who still may be looking for answers:

And, as always — You can cunsult your lil’ spanish friend that comes with every bike: El ManÅ©al…

I believe companies like ICON, Alpinestars, Shift, etc. make really good winterizing tools… there called Jackets.

I just rode from Atlanta to San Diego with a normal TourMaster jacket (rain, mesh, and insulation layers), VENTHILATED gloves, and jeans with mesh Joe Rocket riding pants (no insulation; no winter underwear, short-sleeve T-Shirt). Got here this morning (Christmas Eve). :) I listened to The Weather Channel at every stop and all they’d talk about was “extreme winter stoms” the entire time.

I was OK for the most part though my hands were FREEZING at some points. I kinda cheated with some silk liners and latex gloves underneath, but they didn’t help much and I’d have to stop and warm them on the exhaust. Everytime I passed a Wal-Mart the weather was too good to waste time getting non-vented gloves just because it “might” get bad again. It’s tempting to want to make good time in good weather, but I always ended up regretting it when I’d end up in the wilderness with freezing temps and the same vented gloves.

Anyone who does not ride when its cold is a weenie. Don’t put your bikes up for the winter, just buy a bigger jacket. Also if its icy just put a 100 or so sheet metal screws in your tires and every thing will be alright. Summers just around the corner….

Snow chains work better than screws IMO.

With my luck I’d get off the bike and forget to detach the system. I’m scattered brained like that.

I’m not an active member of a 250 forum so I’ll post this here… If anybody cares.

I’m in the process of going naked with my green ‘08. Being in love with the Street Triple but not able to afford two payments at the moment, I’ve removed the fairings from my bike and purchased a new headlight, fork bracket and front turn signals. I *think* I can make a semi-watertight housing that will mount to the forks and reuse the stock gauges. The little bike doesn’t look too bad - I just need to heat shrink some wires for added protection and paint the fluid tank black. I can’t wait to get it back on the road without the extra weight of the headlight assembly and fairings. Also, I don’t like pretending that there is a large motor under all that plastic.

I’ve been riding whenever the weather permits here in Lexington, KY. The coldest I’ve ridden was in 15 degrees weather for 35 minutes to work one morning. I’m going to install the jet kit sometimes next month then trade the 2fiddy in towards a new BMW F800GS in the middle of the summer. It’s been a great time visiting this site, though! Thank you for the good times!
