Insurance on a Ninja 250R

motorcycle fireI see the topic of motorcycle insurance discussed quite a bit around the forums and what not… But trying to pull anything useful out of that information is damn near impossible. So I’m going to try and give it a whirl here..

I’m in the position where I need to find a new Insurance company since my current insurance company has decided that “No accidents, No tickets,  No Daily Commute, and Almost 30″ still means I should still pay “Youth” premiums — And so they jacked up my annuals by over 30% from last year. And even though in Florida (That’s where I roll) you don’t necessarily need insurance — I’m still planning on carrying some… You know, in case S**t happens (Nodding to the right….)

So, My question to you is… Who do you have, whats your coverage, do the customer support reps sound cute, where are you located, whats your history and ballpark what are you paying?

Hopefully if we can get some information here that is easy to follow and besides helping me, possibly help someone else.

That’s pretty frick’en good for full coverage. Compared to you I feel like I got robbed. One point that I did not mention because it’s just an added detail is I had to go with a different company all together then who I have my car with as Nationwide quoted me a ridiculous price for the bike who I have my car with and Allstate did the opposite with my car. I know I could get a better rate if I found a company who would insure my car, apartment and motorcycle.

Still need to know what state bud. Here in GA, I’m nearly 28 and I couldn’t come close to that with no tickets or at-fault accidents in the history used to calculate it. I’ll report below with full deets when I can look them up.

I got full coverage insurance today which includes Bodily injury, prop damage, uninsured motorist, passenger coverage, collision, comprehensive for a mind numbing $26.83 a month where the deductible is 500 bucks. There was a 30.00 first year policy fee that was included where I won’t have to pay that again next year for a total of 313.50 per year. I currently live in Little Rock Arkansas but don’t let that fool you as the insurance companies will tell you that Arkansas has some of the highest premiums paid in the U.S. when it comes to insurance costs where this does not make sense at all and I see that in my car insurance. Remember I am not a Arkansan from birth so don’t hold that against me. I am 37 years old with a clean driving record with 27 years motorcycling experience and I live in an apartment with no garage. I think that’s a pretty fair deal. The insurance company that I’ve got this policy through is Allstate.

I have comprehensive coverage ($500 deductible, not including collision) through Progressive for $128 per year. I’m 29 with a clean (within the past 3 years) driving record.

I just checked, and it would be an extra $230 per year to add collision with a $500 deductible. I might end up doing that for the extra peace of mind. That’s only $30 total per month.

    State Farm
    Full Coverage
    $100K/$300K Liability
    $100 Deductible on Comprehensive
    $250 Deductible on Collision
28 yrs. old, no tickets, no accidents
    Portland, Or.
    $14 per month

We also have both our cars and our homeowner’s insurance w/ State Farm so we get a muti policy discount. For both our cars(full coverage on 01 Outback, and Liability and Comp. on 88 Volvo), the bike, and the house (worth $270k) it all comes to $167 per month.

State Farm too, about the same price, but be aware that they don’t include medical coverage with their policy. Make sure medical is included with any policy you’re shopping for if you don’t have seperate health insurance.

You have bigger problems if you don’t have health insurance.

Yup, but it’s still sound advice. I don’t have any, but I plan to soon after I move. Even so, I still needed it for my 600mi ride home and my cross country move (if I decide to ride it). I bought the coverage “for now.”

I use RIDER Insurance…THE BEST!!! Only problem is that they cover New Jersey and PA for now…so anyone in the area should check it out!

I believe I paid like $220 for basic for 1yr. I was 19 when I got my insurance for my bike…clean record, no tickets or accidents or anything…first bike. I think it’s a pretty good deal…it’s who everyone else in the state uses Lol.

Mr. 2Fiddy I really wouldn’t ask for comparable quotes from readers.

I lived in Winter Park for a while and prices were significantly different than where I have lived before. For starters they have different rates for those who do not want to ride with a helmet and a few other differences.

Honestly you being down in Florida where there are no emission laws or State inspections you will be paying more than most parts of the country. I know I did when I moved back to VA about a $400 difference a year for full coverage.

I don’t know what they are doing with the taxes anymore don’t follow it but I know you will get taxed higher as well.

    Mr. 2Fiddy Reply:

You are correct. 1 or 2 different number in your zip code can change your premiums quite drasticly…

Personally, I’m just looking for a global view of what companies people are happy with. And if someone stumbles upon this post, and sees a local price that helps give them a ballpark of what the damage will be — or sees someone raving about a company and passes on that info to help somone else out… Then 2Fiddy.com did it’s job.. ;)

    Outinthedark Reply:

In that case I’m with Progressive with my ‘08. I think I pay $35=/- a month with the $80 deposit.

Here in VA I have the bare minimum seeing as we have an Uninsured Insurance Fee. Basically if you don’t want insurrance fine…you just have to pay up front a large fee and then expect to get hit with an even larger cost when you run into somebody.

I have the minimum $25k/$50k with an extremely low deductible. I don’t think me on the clear bike will damage another car more than $25k so I’ll stick with the minimum.

In Florida however I had Full coverage. I have $50k/$100k and $25k/$50k Comprehensive. I paid more than twice I do now thanks to the ridiculous tax Florida has. I got hit and run twice down in Florida and fell once thanks to the idiot commuters of I-4. If you have ever been in Winter Park right outside of Orlando where I-4 meets up with 436…*shudder* so many accidents. Once heard that it was the worst intersection in Florida with 15 accidents a month.

I’m in Florida as well - Tampa - Florida does not require insurance on motorcycles because they are considered a luxury vehicle.

    I had Allstate - on my 07 Gixxer - and my 08 6R and paid under 1,000 annually with a 250$ deductible.

I have American Family for my car and renters. My agent quoted me $120 something for full coverage with a $100 deductible and $5000 medical. I’m a 25yr female with a not so clean driving record but I think all the speeding tickets are off. She also quoted my bf (32 male) like $150 (I think..it was under $200) for his 2003 GSXR750. Same coverage. We live in WI

WHAT??? How are people getting annual rate of just a hundred or so?

I’m 23, male, live in Toronto. I got a few quotes from different companies for the 250R….Cheapest was $2383.00 per year. I took a training course and got my M2 recently so I dont know if anyone else out there is in the same situation as me.

Canada is SOOOOO much different from the US. I’m 21, live about an hour south of Toronto in cambridge, and my car insurance price is 3 times that of what people 25+ and almost every american pays for there house, 2 cars, and a bike. Us Candians get screwed!! But at the same time, a co-worker of mine has a smaller cc enduro, and he only pays $56 a month for insurance, and his bike is being financed.

Got quoted from American Family for $204 for the year on an 08 250R. I’m 18, have had my motorcycle license for a year. Dad also has his ‘07 Honda Shadow 750, and our cars under American Family. Was really glad to hear when American Family called back and said, “The 250 isn’t considered a superbike so insurance will be the same as the ‘07 Honda. Earlier they quoted me and said they couldn’t even give me a policy because the NINJA 250 was a superbike and I needed 3 years motorcycle experience and 5 years driving.
