Time for another 2Fiddy Giveaway? Yup…
Two weeks ago we posted about a No Cut Brake Light Modulator for the Ninja 250R, and after ordering one for myself I was really impressed with the lil guy, so I worked out a deal to give one away to a Lucky 2Fiddy Reader.
So, we’ll run this contest until Monday (Aug 4th) until noon. How to enter? Just comment on this post, with any story that involves a any close call you have had on a bike. The winner will be chosen by random by ‘Ace-at-mind’ (The guy nice enough to hook us up with this giveaway…)
Sorry International guys — US and Canada only need apply..
In the meantime, if you can’t wait to win, you can pick one up here.
And the Winner is….
Email From Ace-At-Mind:
Hey all. The Weblord here and myself really appreciate your interest and your taking the time to share these tales. I’m supposedly the judge, but actually I’m going to pick several of you and con Mr. 2Fiddy himself into the final decision…
DJAZ’s commentary literally had me laughing out loud after reading the others, and I dig the way Dougie suggested complimenting his freshly won modulator with new exhasts, etc… JaySee had me rolling about “the most beautiful thing in the world”, yeah, I just waxed my bike today. Julian E. Turner’s post hit home to me personally, I had a bicycle wreck exactly like his, 60+ stitches in my head. I also admire the simplicity of travis’s post “I’d love to get 1 of these”. Not quite a close call, unless you count that it got him into the “final draft”.
These authors and stories stick out, ring a bell, and have more stories to tell. I’m not sure I can judge, each is unique in it’s own way. Mr. 2Fiddy, can you put their names into a hat and just draw a winner???
DJAZ
Dougie
JaySee
Julian E. Turner
travisFor the four above who do not win, and for every one else who posted I’m going to offer a discount, $25 with free shipping per unit, limit one per person (there may be a wait, I have limited inventory, and will have to order more). I’ve set up a temporary web site where you can make a purchase. Mr. 2Fiddy will send you all an email in a few days with the link.
Ok, again I really appreciate your contributions, here’s to life-long riding, safely.
Congrats DJAZ… I’ll email you shortly…

Well gotta try to win this or buy one. Too many people love to ride on top of you on small roads at high speeds here on Oahu. Happens all the time that I look in the mirror and all I see is grill, I turn around for a quick look and I’m being followed by some one 10 feet off my rear.

Going around a blind turn on back roads of VA…2 cars are flying down the road one trying to pass the other in my lane. I left the road on the far right side and thankfully the car trying to pass went back into their lane. Nothing really just a little bumpy ride around a tight turn.

I live in Northern VA and it’s rated 2nd in traffic. Everyday someone is following me to the point where I feel like I could touch them while I am on the bike. I have looked back at them, and even flashed my lights, sometimes it works other times it doesn’t. I think it’s great someone came up with this and for a great price. Not that you can put a price on safety though.

like it got run over once… and once i was going to fast and hit some loose gravel, slid all over the place, and flew off my bike
yeah all the usual stuff that happens to you on a bike…

Turn lane has green light, I am about four cars back, four cars go and green arrows turn red. I slow down and hear a loud screeching sound. I look in my mirrors and see an old beater truck braking toward me, I brace myself and go to release my clutch, close my eyes, clinch my teeth and…….
Nothing. ….
The old man in the truck stopped about 4 inches from my rear tire! I put bike in neutral, kickstand down and hop off my bike. I point at the red turn arrows and the guy just shrugs his shoulder. I turn and I make the “two finger eyeball” gesture and point at the light again. The old man leans out and says, “You should’ve run it” I yell back ” Do you see that cop across the street?” Sure enough, there was a cop across sitting at the light. I pointed to the cop and the guy was like “Oh, I’m sorry”… I was so angry I couldn’t curse, couldn’t give him the finger. All I could do was shake my head.
Well, if he had hit me.. at least there was a cop nearby. BTW, this is in Homestead, FL (20 miles south of miami)

Going around a corner that I have taken every day to work this summer (at least 50 times). I’m making my corner in the wee hours of the morning to punch in a 6am, and about halfway through the corner realize that overnight they have torn up the road to resurface!
Now riding on dirt… my rear end slid out a bit, but I managed to save it and continue down the road…
Goes to show even if you think you know the road, ya always gotta be paying attention.

Close calls?
I almost hit a deer my second day out. Ive almost been rear ended by some dude on cell phone AND food in his hand. I actually did crash because some guy in a bwm thought hed show up a sport bike and decided to tail gate me down the mountain until I got freaked out because he got TO CLOSE and hit some sand which caused me to over adjust and I went down. Oh and a few days ago on my way to work, we are aloud to share lanes here, So I was slowly bringing my bike down an off ramp to make a right turn and a door came swinging out in front of me. Wow.

On my Honda Ruckus scooter a few years ago a guy rolled a stop sign to make a right turn in front of me. So I hit the brakes when for the horn, and instead gave him a blast of the high beam. Bad thing is, on a 50cc scooter going uphill, no chance to even catch him!

Yeah, that was easily my worst exercise. Some people could do it so easily but my bike would stall if I didn’t give it gas (instructors said to go “idle speed”) and it would lose stability and shake violently if I tried to give it any throttle at those speeds. I think it was my weight to blame… ~260lbs and it felt like my butt was glued to the seat! I don’t think I got it right one time during the exercise, either going over the lines or putting a foot down, but at least I didn’t need my foot for the test (I still touched the lines :(). Well, at least I passed.
Speaking of MSF courses, the Ninja 250R, and this brake modulator: I think all the MSF courses should have these on their bikes, which are typically 250R bikes if you didn’t take yours at a H-D dealer.
In the exercises that share the range with other students, one particularly slow inexperienced rider will slow down the other inexperienced riders (lowest common denominator). This makes it extremely difficult to meet the instructor’s requirement that you always “show some brake” before a turn, even if you are already below proper entry speed. I was told several times to use my brakes even though I did (the instructor missed it).
When you are struggling in the middle of such a line, the riders behind you are also struggling to attain entry speed, it is even more critical that they see your brake lights. Just ask the guy that dumped his bike behind me! He was already looking at the turn’s exit when entering the braking area just because he was already at a “slow enough” entry speed. If he caught some blinking out of the corner of his eye, he might not have over-corrected when he finally noticed his dangerous proximity to me. I’m not sure such low-speed shenanigans count as “close calls,” but he could have easily knocked me over and forced me to buy a new helmet (an impact demands replacement).
I’ve had much more serious close-calls on street bikes (you know, the pedal-powered kind) and BMX bikes. Mr. 2Fiddy’s statement seems to include them, so I might as well spill it.
If they had brake lights and modulators, I might not have this scar on my chin!
At about six years old, I was racing a friend down a neighborhood hill so steep that I couldn’t turn the bicycle’s handlebars at full-speed… I was a weakling and I couldn’t fight the gyroscopic force of this giant Schwinn that I was too small for. I was somehow perfectly lined up behind my friend’s little bike and I didn’t realize how fast I was gaining (drafting?). When I realized it, it was too late to brake and I rode right up on his tire and went airborne WITH my bike. I landed chin-first taking a chunk of flesh with it. I could swear that I did a full flip in the air with my bike (kid fantasy? well, no one disputed it). 21 years later and I can still count where the stitches were. It makes for one weird goatee.
Anyway, I don’t really know if my friend’s bike was braking but I have no other theory for how he got so far ahead and I caught up so quickly (it was a straight hill). If I had seen a brake light flashing in my periphery vision while hunched and looking mostly down (decrease wind resistance), it wouldn’t have happened. My Schwinn did have some kind of tail lights and a generator, though only the headlight worked. I saw this same hill claim many other victims (I wrecked, killing a pet rabbit once), but most of my other close-calls were in my early teenage years where I’d routinely be forced off the road by cars, sometimes getting my thin tires caught in storm drains while moving fast about town.

I was living in Dallas a few years back where there is always a ton of bikes and they have really big bike nights/meeting places on Friday nights. I ended up going with one of my CRAZY friends who had an R1 while I rode my little SV 650S at redline. After hanging out at the event and mingling a large group of riders got together and decide to meet up at a secluded place where everyone could start racing for money. On the way to the new destination I was influenced and coaxed to ride in a swarm of bikes that had to of looked like a swarm of bees speeding down the highway. Everybody was driving at 110 to 120mph at about 1:00 am where I did not feel comfortable riding in such close proximity with so many riders that I knew nothing about, but I did it any ways. The scary part came when one jerk off in the lead pack decided to hit his brakes and do a high speed stoppie. Before I knew it and could even react I blurred past this guy within inches at 110mph were my life did not even have the time to flash before my eyes. That’s my scary moment.

I just like to ride my bike to places cause she doesnt like to ride . so she just follows me in her car lol . but i guess i didnt tap my brakes the same rythm i normally do . so at one of the stop lights she had to swerve to the next lane to avoid hitting me . Haha . so it all comes down to i dont even trust my own wife behind me in a car . its sad but the truth!

First off, I must say that is a very detailed ebay listing, wish all were like that one.
My closest call was…
Going through an intersection in a long line of traffic, the car in front of me takes a right and I drift left to go around him. There was a guy at the red light waiting to right and either decided the gap was wide enough to squeeze his big SUV butt in or he never saw me drift left because he was also on his phone. Luckily I wasn’t going fast so I just stopped and shook my head at him, though I’m still not sure if he was ever aware what he did.

Well it was the second day I had my bike.. I have never rode before… so everything was still new to me so I was taking it slow… Just trying to get a feel for riding until I got used to it…
I was coming home from work and I put my turning signal on very early because there was a car behind me… as I passed the neighbors house before mine she was backing out of the driveway but seen me and stopped…
Well the car in front of me stopped paying attention to me and was too busy watching the neighbor although I had turned my blinker on and started slowing down to turn…
I live in the country and have a graval drive way so I have to come to almost crawling speed as I turned in… well as I proceed to turn in I noticed she was still not looking at me, talking on the phone and driving full speed towards me and was less than 10 feet away…. so at the last second I popped out the clutch hammered down on the throttle and ran into the ditch in my front yard past my driveway… as I did I looked over to my left and the front end of her car missed my back tire and leg by maybe 4 or 5 inches at the most.. and I almost dumped the bike trying to slow down in the grass,,,,, then the dumb woman had the nerve to flip me off as if it was my fault..
Thank God I was paying attention.. and had fast enough reflexes, if not I would probably not be typing this today…
If by chance I had a brighter break light she would have saw me and this would have all been avoided…although I doubt it considering I think the blinkers were a good enough indication that I was about to come to a stop…

Hey guys,
I’ve been lucky to not have had any close calls, the closest thing to getting hit was when I was taking my gf on the highway for the first time on the back, I was approaching the on-ramp and noticed a car. I slow down enough to slip in behind him at the speed he was going , the guy thought i didn’t see him and slammed on the breaks, for which my response was the same to slow down, until i was at about to approach the lane. Then just decided to go for it and take off, he then came at me like a bat outta hell up my end, flips me off, hits the passing lane and takes off. The nerve of some people like I was endangering him. Take care guys and goodjob this is my current homepage thanks to all the great posts :D, keep up the good work!

Well i had a close one during traffic hour. Usually theres not much traffic on the turn i take going back home on my 250. i speed up a little and while turning left at about 60 mph, i check ahead and theres a bunch of cars stopped in traffic, i quickly balance back right and slam on brakes and barely missed the last cars bumper by about 5 inches. Luckily i went on the right side of that last vehicle. SO close… take a breathe and im SAFE!! sigh..

I can’t believe I forgot this.
I was out on my bike heading to work and I changed lanes, only to look up and the light turned red and the cars in front of me were stopped. I hit my brakes and my back tire locked up on me. I was praying that I wouldn’t hit the cars. Somehow I went in between the two cars and ended up in the intersection. I looked around and then just went before I got hit.
Let’s just say I learned a valuable lesson that day while riding the bike. Never hit the back brake first very hard.

Little winding road that I often take to work has a few dips in it. On dip hides the entrance to a road. I purposely slow down to be ready should a car jump out in front of me. Last week it happened. Thankfully, I was ready, alert, and quickly slowed down. Made me mad because I saw them just after I topped hte hill, but they were talking on their cell phone, and appeared to have never looked!

Was on a two lane road when a car tried to enter my lane, I hit the brakes hard (since no one was behind me), the guy cuts me off. I change lanes, pass him (of course), next thing I know he is next to me again and tries to enter my lane. This time I had to swerve off the road while hitting my brake. A friend of mine said this happenned to him and he kicked the car! But I would never do such a thing. Too violent, road rage and all that. Anyway stay safe, there are some crazy people out there!

So, we need to talk about close calls….lucky for me I just had my first!
I’ve had my Blue Ninja 250 for just under a month, my first bike, my first motorcycle endorsment…I’m stoked!!!! I ride as much as possible using everything from the MSF class, to friends advise, and all the knowledge and advise I soak up from great sites like 2fiddy.com and others.
Well, last week I was siting at a stop light about 4 cars back. The guy in front of me decides to put his mid 80s pickup truck into revers and unintentually try to take me out! With the 1 second I had to ponder my options I decided it’s much better to drop the bike and hop off then allow him to hit the font end and possible push me off and under the bike cause physical damage regardless of all the safety gear I had on. After letting the bike down i run up to thte passanger window and say some choice words…he gets out, we move, and exchange insurance information. Near the end I tell him he’s lucky i dropped the bike instead of having a possible bodily injury claim. He get’s pissed and tells me that “thats a matter of opinion”, he gives me a bunch of attitude and then speeds off! Now I’m stuck with a scratched up brand new bike!!! Fairings, exhaust, brake lever, mirror, handlebar end, and a broken blinker! I only have liabilty with geico so I reported it to them then continued to call Farmers, his insurance to file my claim. I gave to nice women all the details and then had to wait for the verdict…………they called yesterday and said they have found their client at fault and will cover the damages caused by the incedent! Hell Yeah!!!!! I’m stocked! now I have to see where and how to go about getting the estimate for repair! I want the bike back to perfect! I don’t want a repainted fairing…I want a new one! can’t fix chrome, so It looks like a new exhaust is in order! Hopefully due to this guys stupidity and lack of awareness I’ll be able to slap a nice new aftermarket exhaust and jet kit in the bike to compliment the light modulator won from my first close call/ motorcycle accident claim/ drop/ and repair!!!!!
Thanks for reading and considering my story….I do everything possible to ride as safe as possible! and this event has taught me even more than I thought…It’s not neccessarly me I have to worry about, it’s all the other drivers out there that are after me!

Well moving from New Jersey to Colorado was quite an experience in itself, but after making a move you really see just how different it is. The aptly titled Wild Wild West may have died off but its roots are still ingrained in this area, and for good reason. There is thousands and thousands of acres preserved by a government agency called the BLM. They manage the land out here and have several uses for it while trying to keep it pristine. Now by now you may be wondering what this has to do with a close call with a 2008 Ninja 250r but I’m getting there. You see one use for this land is allowing animals such as cattle to free range up in the mountains during the summer where it is cooler and just today I found out first hand where some are. I was riding in an area called Schweitzer Lake near Cedar Ridge, Colorado and found myself quickly approaching a massive brown cow after cornering a sharp turn. I stopped and beeped the horn and the massive steer grunted and ran down the road, apparently this is a fence out state not a fence in state. That was my close call.

Don’t ride in rush hours..ever if you can. Don’t pass or ride in the left lane past a merge lane. Don’t ride with other guys on bikes unless you have some self control and a properly proportioned ego (nope) and be careful.
I always modulate my brake lights. i always watch the rearview until someone is behind me stopped.
This comes from being hit from behind. By a girl doing her makeup. I wound up over her hood and on the ground before I knew what hit me. Bike was totaled. Twisted swingarm and frame.

I got off the exit ramp off the highway and was waiting at the red light to cross a four-lane road. I got the green light and started to cross. When I was just over halfway across, I looked to my right and saw a car barreling down the road with no intention of stopping. I was absolutely petrified because I knew he was going to hit me. The car was a Hyundai Accent and it slammed into my right side between 30 and 50 MPH (according to the police report). To make things worse, the driver looked at me and then took off, getting back on the highway. I was lying in the road with my bike about 200 feet away. I remember cars passing me and no one stopping to see if I was alright for about five minutes of agonizing pain. Finally, an unmarked police car showed up, and an ambulance did shortly after. I was taken to the hospital and after some x-rays and kidney surgery, I thankfully recovered.
The driver who hit me was an illegal immigrant from Colombia. The car was borrowed from his uncle, who was letting him live in his house illegally. The only reason they police were ever able to track down the car was because he hit my bike so hard his front bumper ripped off and the license plate was lying in the road near me. They ended up catching the guy who hit me. He was about 20 years old and was running drugs in back and forth in the car, so he knew it would be over if he stopped. After a few months, he was deported and I was awarded a settlement, plus medical expenses and the cost of the bike. It was a truly terrifying experience, and I do not ride on that road to this day. I know the odds are next to none that it would happen there again, but I can’t bring myself to riding there. I’m happy enough that the experience didn’t keep my from getting on a bike again.

I haven’t had any close calls on a motorcycle, but I had plenty of close calls back in high school when used to ride a moped. People generally respected me and gave me space, unless I was riding in a single lane road and couldn’t maintain the speed limit. Then I used to get people driving all over me. Luckily, nobody ever hit me or anything, but experiences like that put hair on your chest… and other things in your pants.

Came around a corner during 5 o’clock traffic to find a line of cars stopped. I was near full lean and had to pull it up and lay on the brakes. Got stopped just enough to slide into the back taillight of a Silverado. It was so close that the mirror got tilted in and I came to stop with my shoulder resting on the taillight.. It all happened so quick. I just remember seeing the truck.. grabbing the brakes and seeing the look on the guy’s face that was fixing to pull out onto the road. Here’s a tip.. look where you want to go. I wasn’t looking at the stopped truck and it probably saved me.

I live in a small tourist town in the mountains.
Anything that helps you be more visible is by all means a good idea.
I’ve GOT to get one of these.
The big problem with traffic up here is that people are so busy looking at the scenery and the “quaint shops” in town that they don’t keep their eyes and attention where it should be - on the road while they’re driving! I hope I win this, otherwise I’ll be investing in one - because I really do need one up here.

My clase call incident invols riding to school. One day as I was stuck in traffic because of the congestion, I was almost rear ended by a person in a SUV. The woman was on her cell phone and not paying attention to what was in front of her. ME! As I was taught in the riders course, always have the bike in gear and the clutch pulled in. This advice saved my life. I was able to ride in between the car infront of me and the car beside it, avoiding the SUV that would have hit me. The SUV hit the car which was in front of me.

I was riding around some back roads here in Victoria, B.C. and was winging around a bend going about 75km/h. I was right in the middle of theturn, in the middle of my lane when a guy coming from the other direction in a pickup comes flying around the corner… halfway into my lane. Thankfully we had talked about and practiced this kind of maneuvering at the riding course I took ( everybody should take one) and was able to brake lightly enought o maintain controland lean hard to the very inside of my lane and get out of the guys way.
Another thing taught at our course was to flash your brake lights when approaching a stop, which I do, so this need gadget would continue doing what I already do but probably more effectively and reliably.
