Shortie Exhaust… Homemade?!?!

Reader Chris sent me in this picture of his Homemade Shortie exhaust, and I just had to put it up. This is such a great little example of how crafty the 250R Community is getting.
Even better — When I asked Chris, he was nice enough to throw us together a lil step by step — AND — Add in some videos… Woot! So, if you’ve been looking for a shortie exhaust on the cheap… Here’s your chance..
Here’s the how to make the shortie exhaust.
Parts:
Stock exhaust
fiberglass pack for motorcycle exhaust
1.5 ” Perforated tube

Optional parts
1 1/2 to 1 3/4 pipe adapter
Tools:
Hacksaw
1 1/2 metal drill cutter (pictured)
welder - take to a muffler shop or a professional
step by step.
1) remove stock can from bike when it is not hot.
2) remove beauty cap
3) saw off aluminum can at the edge of the can.

4) take drill cutter and cut center out.

5) cut the backing plate along the perforated dots for easy cutting.

6) attach adapter and weld in place.

7) take aluminum can and cut to desired length. Measure twice cut once!

remove cat.

9) cut perforated tube to size.

10) cut fiberglass to size and roll onto perf tube really tight. The trick is to keep that extended part of the end cap to keep the fiber glass secured.

11)Peice together and weld it up.

Thats all there is to it.
I cannot take all the credit for this modification. I may be the first to cut the can to a smaller size, but there have been others who cut the can and gutted the insides before me. Please give credits to redrider from newninja.com that made this mod look so easy. And to HKr1 from kawiforums for giving me the initial idea to have a shorter exhaust.
Thanks Chris for the awesome how-to!

Not quite sure what shortening the pipe adds to the bike? Sound better? Performance better? Just looks like quite a bit of work.

Most after market exhaust systems have a “cherry bomb” design. This mod is a cheap alternative to the ones that are available on the market. Generally speaking the designs are the same.

saw someone put cherry bomb mufflers on their 250 ninja. what jets did they use? did it change the power or mileage? what size bomb is good? and last but not least if a person were to make kevlar or carbon fiber upper fairings for 04 range ninjas would there be a market if the price was half of new?
