2009 Ninja 250R?!?
Guys… The Rumormill is Swirling… Searches for “2009 Ninja 250R” landing here are up 300% in the last 2 days…
I called my dealer and they said they heard July 2008. Called another Dealer and they said Aug 2008. None of which could comment on if they know of any changes. Neither of which have received a 2008 in over a month…
Anyone got any inside information? I’m sure some dealer out there has some information on when they will start to arrive. I’m just not getting my hopes up (yet) — Because if it was too be arriving soon, I’m sure that Kawasaki would update their website.. But I’ll keep watching — and if anyone hears anything — make sure you drop us a line over here!

A bait-and-switch local dealership tried to upsell me after selling my 250R, the last one they were receiving this year, to another customer (I had a deposit on it). I came to claim my deposit back and, in an attempt to make their offer on a larger more expensive bike seem more appealing, they told me “some time next year” when I inquired about the 2009 250R. I went home and called around (almost fruitlessly) looking for any other dealers that still expected a 250R that had not been claimed by a deposit. I asked a more honest dealer and was told “October” on the ‘09 250R. If it adds fuel injection, I’m going to ask my new dealer to move my deposit to a 2009 model even if it cost another $500.

I’ll bet a big shiny silver dollar that the US 09’s won’t have fuel injection… There is no reason for Kawasaki to add it to the north america market bikes..
My best guess for 2009 would be minor tweaks, and perhaps new colors…

It improves fuel economy in a time when that is most important and that is a big reason. I think that they under-estimated the demand for the classic 250R’s fuel economy at the worst time possible - just as high fuel prices are starting to sell motorcycles. They instead focused on improving the low-end and middle of the powerband and realized their mistake only in time to downplay the ‘08 250R’s reduced fuel economy (no numbers mentioned so customers will assume based on old info). Now, they have no choice but to promote it on their http://www.kawasaki.com/mpg page because it’s still the second-highest they sell! They also under-estimate the public’s willingness to pay $500 more for fuel injection as evidenced by the prices they are willing to pay over MSRP for even the carbureted model.
I’m not saying that they will but that’s my argument for why they might. I’d really like to know what kind of difference FI makes.

I honestly dont think they will make to many changes to the 09… It will be a carbon of the 08. They will start making minor changes and adding colors when sells of the bike start to drift a bit. IMO.
[Reply]
Mr. 2Fiddy Said,
June 30, 2008 @ 4:49 pm
Julian,
I disagree.. The amout of time it would take to re cooperate any benefits from FI will out weight it’s value.
[Example] Lets say the FI Model is 1000$ more. And averages 60 MPG vs the Carb’s 55MPG. @ 4$ a gallon, Thats 6.6 cents a mile for FI and 7.2 cents a mile for carb’d… @ .6 cents a mile difference, It’ll take 160,000+ miles to make up that $1000 in the price.
Cost to market right now is most important to Kawasaki… Until there is other competition out there besides UM/Hyosoung — They just need to keep the price in the < $4k spot, and they’ll keep on selling like hotcakes…

Fuel Injection idea doesnt seem to be the smartest thing out there right now. Anyone who was on a waiting list for the 08’s might as well tell your dealer to put that deposit on your 09. I spoke with a customer service rep from Kawasaki today asking about the 09’s as soon as i seen this post. I was told the 08’s are currently 1 month behind in production. Call them if you dont believe me. The minor changes in the two will mostly be in color. I wish i was given some insight on some of the other things but no go. If you really want an 08 your best bet is going to be Ebay or Craigslist. If you remember last year it was late fall early winter when they were released. i suspect it will be that time frame again.

oh and dont stoop to a UM or Hyosung. JUNK!!!!!! a buddy of mine bought one when i was on the list for my 250 and within a month had it in the shop twice and was listing it for sale. needless to say he paid a little under five and when resold only got about 3900 with only five hundred miles and completely stock. Not worth the money and def do NOT hold value. No aftermarket support besides a speed demon exhaust…. Oh yea look for Kawi to go with a smaller tail then they rear fender from this year. something more along the lines of the ZZR600. That was told to me by a trusty dealer here in Pa.

nothing will change for 2009, not even colours…
u guys in the US wont get FI cos it makes the bike more expensive than the old one
given kawasaki’s history with ZZR and GPX, ie they styed the same forever, i wouldnt ecpect anything to change till at least 2010 or maybe even 2011 and i dont think they will do much then either, maybe change colours, maybe change the headlight a tad, but nothing much…
manufacturers dont change their big sports bikes in less than 2 year cycles and some even in 3 year cycles… so KHI will not bother changing a little 250, cos its gonna sell big anyway… look at the GPX, it was still their biggest selling bike in 2007, some 20 years and minimal changes later….
cheers guys and gals

Pfft. carbs work fine, FI is more expensive. Kawi is not going to retool or re-EPA certify their best selling back-ordered to the moon 250r. I think Kawi has one ambitious MBA and he can’t believe they listened to him about the refresh. He doesn’t dare make anymore smart decisions!
That Hyosung is junk and heavy. But I give them credit for trying. Imagine if Honda and Suzuki would bring their 250’s to the states. How bout Aprilia? Are they stupid? Sheesh..bike snobs.

The 2008 Ninja 250r already has FI over in europe. I would imagine that they would try to put fuel injection into the US bikes because it would up their sales. It probably wont make that much of a different anyways though. Maybe more fuel efficient but that wouldn’t change much either. I personally think that the carbs work fine.

To mr. franchise: I hate to say it, but one would have to be a fool to think that kawi would not put the ’09s up until 5/09. IMO, along with dealers, multiple forums, and the very vague kawi employees (on both occasions that i called kawi directly), it is ASAP. Fact of the matter is wealth dictates everything. Kawasaki is losing money at the moment because of under-production/ high demand of the new-model 250, which was most likely not predicted. They hit a gold mine with this bike, due to many factors, but probably mainly great new looks, and fuel economy (with raising pump prices). The demand and monopoly that they have created allows them limitless sales (linear rate with production). The fact that Kawi is not filling more orders than those already existing means one of two things… the ’09s must be in production currently, or they decided that they no longer like money, and are donating all of their previous proceeds to the training of mice to do back flips while shutting down their business indefinitely. They will be here way before then. Take that to the bank my friend. Disclaimer: Any flaming interpreted from this post was unintentional. Your friendly neighborhood keegan.

I have been holding out for blue. I had a dealer from Georgia that called me Thurs. with a red one but I refused. I just sold my custom painted red yzf 600r and I am dead set on the candy plasma blue. If for some unglodly reason there is no blue for 09 I will be crushed! All of the same 08 colors will be available except GREEN. The 09 price went up to $4650. My dealer just called me asking me for more money to fulfill my 2009 order since the 08 are basicly SOLD OUT/Backorderd. Kawasaki Guarentees each dealer only one 250r for 2009 and thats it! Obviously they will get more than that one but there is no expected time frame as to when the extra 09’s will actually arrive due to the shear global demand for this one bike. Somebody tell Honda, Suzuki and even Yamaha to get thier head outta thier BUTTS!

I don’t understand all the people that want black… you lose the bad a** lines with black, any other color. And the reds look great in RL. The pics i have seen on the internet make it look orange. I saw one of the floor at a dealer the other day…. OTD price was 5200!!!!!!!! BWAHAHAHA. Needless to say, this is why i do not own a bike at the moment. I can wait for the ‘09 at a price like that.

I am from the Toronto area,..word has it that the dealers up here will put their order in around September. We should have them in about Feb. 2009
I am going with Lime Green if they will have that color for 2009.

FI wont come in to the us, cos cost kept it out…. it was thought that the extra cost of FI, that would bump the price above the old ninja 250, was undesirable, so as long as an FI model will cost more off the showroom floor that a carbie version…. you guys wont be getting FI…. which sux, cos im sure in europe there are PCIII’s going about already to mod the fuel/air intake, while carbie guys have to play around with needles…
on another note…
if kawasaki is behind in production for the 08 models…. why would u think that 09 models would suddenly, miraculously appear off the factory floor??
kawasaki with produce all the orders for 08’s then start on the 09 bikes…. the 09 bikes im almost sure will have some amount of delay, purely because 08 bikes need to be produced to fill the current orders….

For Canada, Kawi has stopped production of the 2008 Ninja 250r. The Kawi dealer near my home sold 30, 2008 Ninja 205r’s last April. it took them 2.5 weeks at this dealership. In Canada, the cost for a new 2008 was $4,249.00.
I doubt the EFI will be available for 2009 in Canada. I would be willing to pay extra for it though.
By May of 2008 there were all sold out for ALL of Canada.
You won’t see the 2009’s until Feb. 2009.
You guys in the US are lucky though,…The Canadian dollar is at par with the greenback however, the US price for the Ninja is almost $1,000. less south of the border.

The general release date I’ve heard has been late October from 3 dealers here in the Charlotte NC & Rock Hill SC area … most say the price will be $3999 but I’m sure the MSRP will be lower, most of the dealers in the metro areas jack up the price a good bit.
For my money, I’d say ignore the 250 and go for the 500, even if it gets 10mpg less than the 250, the 500 is a better bike and has more power for the highway…
But one thing is sure, Kawasaki NEEDS to redesign there graphics on BOTH bikes

I just went to the dealer today and they said they are getting 5 more 08 bikes in a month but they are all spoken for. They said the kawasaki meeting is on sep 19th. and from what they know the only changes to the bike will be colors. I put down my deposit and he said he will be getting 4 2009 250r’s in 0ctober but he said expect a delay as long as December. One other person put down a deposit at that Dealer so he gets first choice on colors, then me. I am supposed to call him on the 19th to ask about color choices. I want blue but I have a feeling it wont be available. The dealer said he heard rumors of white and orange which would both look awesome. A guy with an 08 250r at the dealer let me get on his bike and wow!! that thing looks sooo cool. My guess is that Kawasaki made this bike to test the waters and didn’t expect such a surge of interest. I think they are focused on 2009 manufacturing, maybe another bike is going to get a makeover. The 500r needs one bad. I have a feeling there will be a lot of 250r’s in 09.

Sept 19th is the big show and dealers can put orders in, a small batch of already-manufactored bikes will be shipped and available 2-3 weeks after that, putting them in the beginning of october. They will then start processing the orders and meeting the exceptional demand. If you don’t already have a deposit on an 09 then you more than likely will have to wait for the second large shipment which would be around the end of 08 into early 09.

However, we should start seeing the 09’s in September/October…possibly even late August. The just told us this yesterday when we were inquiring about the shipment we were expecting.” The shop I heard this from is pretty trusted in my area and is run by a nice group of folks. I speak with them all the time and have never been mislead. I am just gonna go down tomorrow and put a deposit down for an 09 (Blue preferably) and wait it out. Just to let you guys know, I bought a lime green 08 Ninja 250 from Northstar Rec in Sudbury Ontario this past Monday. The 250 had come off the truck from Kawi the week before.
He had 9 deposits down and sold it to me who emailed him the day he got it because he did not want to “lose a sale”. In otherwords, he failed to call one of the 9 with a deposit because this way he sells 10 250’s.
Sadly, after 25 years of riding accident free, on my way home an 85 year old woman pulled out in front of me and clobbered me and my new bike. I am so ticked off! I paid cash for the bike and now it is sitting with $3,000 worth of damages, nevermind labour!

I just called the dealer yesterday. They expect them in sometime next month. I think they want a deposit so they can make a sale. All these dealer have no idea when they are coming in. I do know if you don’t make a deposit and sign a deal for one you will be waiting a long time. I expect a shortage of bikes do to high demand. I’ll bet the areas that winter is near may get the lesser amount of bike do to the decline in sales of motorcycle during those months. Places like Hawaii, California, and Florida will see the higer percentage of these bike at the dealers.
I live in Hawaii. And the market for motorcycles is booming. Gas prices are second highest to California maybe in some parts of the islands even higher. Everyone is looking for a alternative to this madness of filling up a truck for $100.00 or a car for 50.00 to 60.00.
Well I hope we all get one of these beautiful bikes soon. I know they will go fast. I’d sign a deal with a dealer now before this meating in Septmber. I have a feeling if you don’t sign for an out the door price in black and white you will be at the dealer’s mercy. I expect bad news that dealers will likely get very little of these bikes. Dealer will use this to their advantage and out the door prices will be high. Most dealer will have a take it or leave it attitude. I was told Id get a 4800.00 out the door price if I’d sign a deal with a deposit sometime this week. That with the bike staying at 3999 msrp. In Hawaii freight cost are almost twice the cost of the States. I might take this offer. The dealer said he has 4 bike already sold. I hope he is bluffing to get me to make a deal. I really don’t think they will get more then four bikes next month if they do come out. I predict October and think most dealers will get two or three. Maybe KAWA is going to send bike to places that have orders already. So making one now even sound more tempting.
Well I could go on and on. Blah Blah. By now most peopl will read the next post. Well I wish you all safe riding out there.

Well, put this into perspective. Everyone is acknowledging the color changes of the new ‘09 bikes. And if MSRP is going to be at least $500 more, then extra charges from dealerships regarding high demands. Think, if ‘08 models are at least $500 cheaper, why not get an ‘08 and just paint the bike your own god damn color? I don’t know the prices on paint jobs, so anyone could correct me on that. But if the cost is right, I think it’s a better deal, even though I personally prefer lime green anyway.

Well its inconvenient and a pain in the ass, but the closest dealership to me told me they are not receiving any new shipments of ’08s. So getting an ‘09 is the only way to go now, I guess, unless like shane said, buy used. And most go to about 5000 used right now, which is completely abusive to what the price should be. The lowest I found was 4,000 and I called them today about it, I could care less if the color is red. No answer yet, but from what I remember, they were still selling ’07s when there were ’08s and might still be selling ’07s I don’t really know. Would be nice if someone knew. I hate companies how companies hide everything and do what they can to keep prices higher, but who says I wouldn’t do the same if I was a company owner? Lmao.

I will just use this extra time to do more research regarding gear I want (not to mention this will allow me to push the date I take the MSF course back a little bit so it isn’t 23 bajillion degrees outside while am taking the course.). The price of the 09 has gone up that extra $500, but that is not enough to keep me from taking the plunge and getting one. I jus thope I’m not too tall for it when it gets here. haha

So, I tried to get my deposit back and the dealer told me that I could only get $3800 since they already ordered the bike. I told him since there was no product they couldn’t withhold my money. It is a lot of crap. He only wants to take your money. Contact the consumer fraud agency in your town and tell them the story. They should be able to get your $200 back. They incur no freight charges and kawasaki will only be releasiong two bikes at a time at the most. The 2009 is the same bike and just $500 higher. If your local consumer frauds bureau will not help then write or call your state attorney generals office. They will investigate and also make a note of a complaint about this dealer. This dealer needs to have a slew of complaints against him. I hate to say it but youre being gouged b y the dealer with an OTD price of $4000. Unless that includes sales tax and some stupid fee for typinmg up a few seconds of a standard sales contract. I just picked up a 2008 new Ninja 250 for $3300 OTD. Of course I am a good customer of my dealer and they play no games like dealer prep or freight or documentation fees. Naturally I had to travel but Im willing to do that rather than be gouged by greedy bike dealers.

If youre looking for a new bike refuse to pay extra for freight or dealer prep fee and the dumbest of all (documentation fees). You want an out the door price of the bike and of course if you buy in your state the sales tax and perhaps a title fee. If you cannot make a deal go out of state. Get an out the door price and get a pickup and get it yourself with two helpers to unload it so you wont wreck it after you get it home (which is easy to do if its only you and one other helper). Remember you can always take your business elsewhere.

Trust me — I have seen this document in person at a Kawasaki dealer… It’s not fake… If it was I would of pulled it by now.

I can confirm that it’s real simply because, in *July*, I was there when my dealer was told that my order was canceled and that they would be receiving a brochure about it in the mail. A few days later, and this hit’s the ‘net without me saying a thing.

I went into a Kawi dealer on august 1st and put a deposit down for a 2009, hoping that i would get it before the winter. Does this mean that each dealership will only receive one 09 ninja until next spring?

Somehow I doubt you’re getting it this OR next week, it’s not even on their website yet. Even the 500 - which has been there for several weeks now - still doesn’t have a price tag. I think late September to early October sounds more realistic.

Okay…there are a few early releases. I had my down payment on the bike for a little bit now and the dealer (Baltimore) recieved 2 in. I just happened to be one of the lucky ones. I picked mine up on Tuesday…been taking it out everyday since. Trying to get the thing broken in. Been riding around town. So…if you were lucky enough to be high up on the list you could have one somewhere near you.

To Giovanni:
I live close to Baltimore. What dealer were you fortunate enough to purchase the 09 Ninja 250? What color was the other bike?
Thanks for the info!
